Presentation for Internationals -English spoken:

Tissue is the Issue (ENG)

When you are diagnosed with cancer, many healthcare professionals become involved in your diagnosis and treatment. It often starts with your general practitioner, followed by specialists such as surgeons, internists, pulmonologists, neurologists, urologists, gynaecologists, or oncologists. You may also undergo scans, ultrasound examinations, MRI studies, and blood tests performed by radiologists and laboratory specialists.

You meet and speak with most of these professionals. However, there is one doctor who is just as important to your diagnosis and treatment, yet whom you will probably never meet: the pathologist.

The pathologist plays a crucial role in cancer care. By carefully examining tissue removed during a biopsy or surgical procedure, the pathologist determines whether cancer is present, identifies the specific type of cancer, and assesses how aggressive it may be. Using microscopic examination and specialised laboratory techniques, the pathologist provides essential information that guides the medical team in choosing the most appropriate treatment.

That is why the saying “Tissue is the Issue” is so relevant. The tissue sample contains the answers needed to establish an accurate diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan.

During this presentation, Dr. Cathelijne Tutein Nolthenius-Puylaert will take you into the fascinating world of pathology. She worked as a pathologist from 1983 to 2014, first at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Curaçao and later at Elkerliek Hospital in Helmond, where she remained until her retirement. Her special areas of expertise were breast cancer and lymphomas.

Drawing on more than three decades of experience, she will explain what happens to a tissue sample after it is removed from a patient, how it is processed and examined in the laboratory, and how the results influence diagnosis, treatment decisions, and patient outcomes.

Ultimately, pathology is not only about disease. It is about finding answers that help clinicians provide the best possible care and give patients clarity and hope. That is why, in pathology, the tissue truly is the issue.

Tissue is the Issue (NL)

Daarom luidt het motto: “Tissue is the issue”.

Daarom geldt: “The tissue is the issue.”

Dr. Cathelijne Tutein Nolthenius-Puylaert

(born in Leiden, the Netherlands, on 7 February 1954) is a retired pathologist who devoted more than three decades to diagnostic medicine. Her professional motto, “The tissue is the issue!”, reflects the central role that tissue examination plays in understanding disease and guiding patient care.

After studying Medicine at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) from 1971 to 1979, she completed her training as an anatomical pathologist at Radboud University Hospital in Nijmegen between 1979 and 1983. She then worked as a pathologist at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Willemstad, Curaçao, from 1983 to 1987. From 1988 until her retirement in 2014, she served as a pathologist at Elkerliek Hospital in Helmond, with special expertise in breast pathology and lymphomas.

Cathelijne is the mother of four children and the proud grandmother of twelve grandchildren. Outside her professional life, she enjoys walking, reading, and playing the cello with the Helmond-Venray Symphony Orchestra.

Through her lectures and presentations, she aims to explain the important and often misunderstood work of the pathologist. She is passionate about showing that pathology involves much more than the examination of deceased individuals. By explaining what happens to tissue samples after they are removed by a physician, how they are processed and analyzed, and how the results help guide diagnosis and treatment, she highlights the essential role pathology plays in modern healthcare and, most importantly, in the lives of patients.

Dr. Cathelijne Tutein Nolthenius-Puylaert
